A club, Jim, but not as we know it
The Luxembourg Friends are a group of Luxembourg expatriates living in London who have been meeting every month since 2005.
We are not a club in the conventional sense, and our group has no traditional organisational structure, no committee, no members, and no clubhouse, just a web site whose content is freely available to the public, and a mailing list whose subscribers receive our monthly newsletters.
The Luxembourgers are a very clubable lot. Even the smallest village has a choir, a brass band, a football club, and a gardening society. There are even clubs for those people who don’t feel particularly sociable, called a Spuerveräin, (‘savings club’), whose only objective is to collect enough money to go on an annual outing!
By the way – London has hundreds of clubs. The first one, just called The Club, was founded in the 18th century, and had much in common with the get-togethers of the Luxembourg Friends.
