Covent Garden May Fayre
May 8, 2016 @ 2:00 pm - 5:30 pm
The annual Puppet Festival
Thence to see an Italian puppet play that is within the rayles there, which is very pretty, the best that ever I saw, and a great resort of gallants.
Samuel Pepys Diary, 9 May 1662
Samuel Pepys first recorded seeing a Punch and Judy show in Covent Garden in the year 1662. If you look carefully, you can find an inscription to this effect in the Piazza.
To commemorate the event, puppeteers, (popularly called professors), arrive from all over the country to perform at the annual Puppet Festival at St Paul’s, which is known as the Actors’ Church. In 2016, it takes place on Sunday 8th May.
This neo-classical building became world-famous as a backdrop in the film version of My Fair Lady, starring Audrey Hepburn.
We meet between 12.45pm and 1.00pm at the Eleanor Cross, in the forecourt of Charing Cross Railway Station, The Strand, London WC2N 5HS, before setting out for Covent Garden Piazza.
