Doggett’s Coat and Badge 2017
July 25, 2017Free
The traditional rowing challenge for Doggett’s Coat and Badge takes place this year on Tuesday, 25th July.
It has been taking place on the River Thames every year since 1715, between London Bridge and Cadogan Pier (Chelsea) – the sites of the Old Swan Tavern and the Swan Inn Chelsea. Up to six young watermen will row under 11 bridges on the 4 mile 7 furlong course.
The event was founded by the famous actor Thomas Doggett, in honour of the accession to the throne by King George I, which took place on 1st August 1714.
The winner of the race, wearing his new coat and badge, is presented to the Prime Warden of the Fishmongers’ Company at a grand banquet held at Fishmongers’ Hall.
