Grimaldi Memorial Service 2020
February 2 @ 1:30 pm - 5:00 pmFree
Every year, the Grimaldi Memorial Service, also known as the Clowns’ Service, is taking place in East London on the first Sunday in February.
Around 60 clowns from all over the world attend this ceremony at All Saints Haggerston in Livermere Road, wearing full slap (make-up). The service commemorates the Father of Clowning, Joseph Grimaldi (1778 – 1837) who was the most famous London actor and comedian of the Regency era. Clowns are known as Joeys in his memory.
Although the service proper only starts at 3.00pm, it is advisable to arrive early, in order to observe the merry-making taking place outside the church, and to secure good seats inside.
Free, just turn up.
Nearest Overground station: Haggerston.
