Twelfth Night Celebration 2019

January 6 @ 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm

Free

The Twelfth Night traditionally marks the end of the Twelve Days of Christmas.

A free annual celebration takes place on Sunday 6th January 2019 on Bankside in Southwark, near Shakespeare’s Globe.

The festivities, which have their origins in ancient mid-winter customs, start with the arrival of the Holly Man, who is dressed in a fantastic coat of green foliage. Together with a group of actors, known as the Bankside Mummers, and the London Beadle, he toasts the onlookers, the River Thames and the Globe Theatre with calls of ‘wassail!’ After this, the Mummers perform a funny play by Bankside Pier.

Cakes distributed at the end of the play have a bean and a pea hidden in them. Those who find them are hailed King and Queen for the Day and get crowned. King Bean and Queen Pea then lead the people through the streets of Southwark to the historic George Inn in Borough High Street for more merrymaking.

The Lions Part is an eclectic company of like-minded professional performers who collaborate to create seasonal festivals, plays and theatre pieces that transform public and community spaces as well as traditional theatres with a fusion of stories, playtexts, music, customs and heritage.

This event is free. There is no need to book, just turn up on the day!
