Widow’s Bun Ceremony
The Widow’s Son is a Grade II* listed public house in Bow in the East End of London, situated at 75 Devons Road, London E3 3PJ.
The Victorian pub was built on the site of an old widow’s cottage. Acording to legend, the widow’s only son left to go to sea, and wrote to her explaining that he was returning home at Easter and that he was looking forward to eating one of her delicious hot cross buns. Sadly, he never returned, but his mother continued to bake a fresh hot cross bun for him every year for the rest of her life.
On Good Friday, which this year falls on 19th April, a sailor from the Royal Navy adds a fresh hot cross bun to the collection kept in a net hanging over the bar at the Widow’s Son pub.
The ceremony takes place around 3.00pm.
Proceedings can be watched from outside the venue, but it’s recommended that you reserve a table if you want to be inside.
Cost: Free of Charge
